At St Paul’s C of E Primary, we use the Kapow Design & Technology scheme of work in key stages 1&2. This scheme is divided into different subject areas: Cooking and Nutrition, Mechanisms, Structures, Textiles and Electrical Systems. Due to the broad nature of Design & Technology, each subject area will be delivered at least once every two years to ensure we provide rich opportunities and cover the national curriculum requirements. Some subject areas are delivered more than once in a year to embed important skills and provide further cross-curricular learning opportunities. During the mapping of the subject, we ensured that the Kapow scheme of work covers all aspects of the National Curriculum Design & Technology Programme of Study as each learning outcome has been mapped in long-term and medium-term planning. The curriculum is sequenced towards identified endpoints as units are planned to ensure the teaching of key skills and concepts which are built upon in following units. The implementation and assessment of these endpoints demonstrates a clear progression year band to year band. Pupil’s experience four subject areas, Cooking and Nutrition, Mechanisms, Structure and Textiles, in Key Stage One. These subject areas are revisited and built upon in Key Stage Two. Skills and concepts taught in previous years are revisited and developed along with new learning of more advanced skills, concepts and problem solving.
In Reception, children will explore a range of media and materials through a balance of open-ended play experiences and adult initiated opportunities. Learning will be directly linked to the Expressive Arts & Design and Physical Development areas of learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage Children explore structures though activities such as junk-modelling, duplo, stickle bricks, den making and other large construction opportunities.
